Web-Based Email Shows Declining Engagement Among Younger Age Group in Europe

In August 2011, the average number of minutes spent overall by Europeans on web-based email showed an increase of nearly 11 percent from the previous year. A demographic analysis showed that this increase was mainly driven by higher engagement with web-based email by users age 45 and older. In contrast to all other age groups the average time spent by 15-24 year olds on web-based email revealed an 8-percent decline.

While this may reflect less web-based email use by the younger generation, this is not indicative of their overall communication activity, as social networks, instant messaging, and other methods gain increasing popularity as alternate communication channels.
