The 2023 Golden Globes winners were quite a collection of amazing films, television shows and talent both in front of and behind the camera and this year’s crop was inarguably spectacular.
Looking at the big screen winners, “The Fabelmans,” Steven Spielberg's very personal story of his early cinematic journey took the prize for Best Picture Drama and though it wasn’t a huge box office success, it was a well-reviewed and a film beloved film by those who have seen it and Spielberg was rightly awarded with a Best Director statue for his latest cinematic epic.
Certainly, winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama will put “The Fabelmans” on the radar for a lot of potential viewers who will want to catch the film on the small screen. The winner for Best Film Musical or Comedy was “The Banshees of Inisherin” which is an absolute gem of a film and not to be missed; it's a unique character study earmarked by wonderful performances by Colin Farrell (who took home the Globe for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy) and Brendan Gleeson, the film also won a Best Screenplay award for director Martin McDonagh. Another big winner at the Golden Globes was Austin Butler who gave a phenomenal performance as Elvis in Baz Luhrmann stunning cinematic take on the iconic singer’s life.
Other big winners on the big screen included Ke Huy Quan for “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” Cate Blanchett for her amazing turn as the title character Lydia Tár in Todd Field’s acclaimed “Tár,” Angela Bassett won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ramonda in the box office smash “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and Justin Hurwitz won for his amazing jazz-inspired score for Damien Chazelle’s Golden Age of Hollywood epic “Babylon.” It was heartening to see that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association based their picks for the winners not on their theatrical box office success, but rather their artistic merit.
The spotlight this now places on these films will provide the validation for many viewers to get them to take the leap of faith to catch these films on screens big and small in the lead up to the Oscars® set to air on March 12, 2023.
