March 2026 was another strong month for consumer AI Chatbot usage, with total unique desktop visitors in the U.S. rising to 44.4 million, up 21.3% from February. The category is no longer growing on hype alone; it is expanding because users are beginning to embed AI chatbots into daily work, search, writing, coding, and decision-making. The latest rankings show that while OpenAI still dominates on scale, the market as a whole is becoming more competitive as Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic each posted meaningful month-over-month growth.

ChatGPT remains the clear AI chatbot favorite with 33.86 million unique visitors in March, a 18.9% increase over February. Gemini reached 10.66 million, growing 29.1%, while Microsoft Copilot climbed to 5.02 million, up 44.4%. Those are healthy gains for the three largest platforms, and together they reinforce the central takeaway from the month which is that the market is expanding as more consumers discover how AI can be integrated into both personal life and commercial workstreams.

The biggest breakout was Anthropic’s chatbot Claude which jumped 130.1% month over month, increasing from 1.16 million visitors in February to 2.66 million in March. That is the fastest growth rate among the major platforms in this ranking and is enough to solidify Claude’s fourth place position in Comscore’s Consumer AI Chatbot Usage Rankings. Just a few months ago, Claude was still perceived as a niche option for power users and safety-minded early adopters. March data suggests that perception is changing quickly with Claude attracting broader consumer awareness at exactly the moment Anthropic is increasing its product velocity and sharpening its public profile.

Why Claude’s growth stands out

Claude’s March surge matters for two reasons. First, the percentage growth is extraordinary for a platform that is already operating at national scale for both consumer and enterprise users. Second, the gain appears to be tied not only to general AI demand, but also to growing brand trust among users. Anthropic has been positioning Claude as a more thoughtful, safety-forward chatbot, and that message increasingly resonates with users.. The company’s public stance around use guardrails drew significant attention earlier this year, and Claude rose to the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store rankings during that period. But that does not explain the entire growth story. In a market where every AI chatbot is racing to add capabilities and platform integrations, Claude’s rise suggests that brand clarity, functionality and trust still matter.

The broader implication is that Claude may be entering an inflection point was one of the top four AI chatbots alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. However, while Gemini and Copilot benefited early on from the help of integrations across Google and Microsoft products, Claude’s rapid recent growth is driven by feature awareness, performance, and reputation. If Anthropic can convert this attention into broader partner integrations and sustained repeat usage, the company could become the clearest challenger in the second tier behind OpenAI. It’s a trend we will watch closely.

The bottom line

The March 2026 Comscore Consumer AI Chatbot Usage Rankings show an AI chatbot market that is still led by scale but increasingly defined by momentum. ChatGPT remains the benchmark, Gemini and Copilot continue to grow rapidly, and Claude has emerged as the month’s most important mover. For anyone tracking the competitive landscape, that combination matters: leadership remains stable at the top, but user attention is still very much in play. If recent product launches and partnerships continue to raise Claude’s visibility, March may be remembered as the point when Anthropic moved from the sidelines into the center of the consumer AI conversation.
