Cable Connection Speed More than Twice that of DSL
RESTON, Va., April 28, 2004 – Comscore Networks today released an analysis of average download speed across the three primary Internet connection types. Based on data captured in the first quarter of 2004, Comscore ISP performance measurements show that cable providers are supplying the average end user with a download speed more than twice as fast as that of DSL providers.
“Broadband providers continue to compete on two primary fronts – speed and price. DSL subscriptions have often been marketed at a lower price and cable connections typically deliver a higher average download speed,” said Russ Fradin, executive vice president of Comscore Networks. “It’s clear that the attraction of these two benefits is fueling broadband adoption among consumers, with high-speed subscriptions accounting for nearly 50 percent of the connections in many of the nation’s largest markets.”
In March, Comscore released an analysis of broadband penetration in the top 50 U.S. markets.
About Comscore Telecommunications SolutionsComscore’s ISP tracking service is based on the Comscore Global Network – which continuously and confidentially captures the complete Internet activity of more than 1.5 million Internet users, including large samples of users from home, work, and university locations, with both dial-up and broadband connections of all types. Unlike other online tracking systems, which compile clickstream data from a small sample of specific ISPs or user PCs, Comscore’s monitoring technology operates on servers that are part of the link between the panelists and the Internet. This design uniquely enables Comscore to measure the number and type of ISP subscriptions, across a representative sample of Internet users.
