Last Minute Christmas Shopping

Consumers increasingly leave their holiday shopping until the last minute. UKOM approved Comscore data from the holiday season last year suggests that not everyone has their Christmas shopping ready by Black Friday. This month UKOM identified the ecommerce categories which see usage peak in December. Last minute shopping also means there is still time to activate late advertising spend from the retail sectors which see most uplift in December.

This UKOM insight looks at the following key topics:

  • Visitor numbers to retail sites selling predominantly toys, consumer electronics- and goods, computer hardware and home furnishings peak in October or November.
  • In spite of the increasing promotion of Black Friday in November, many retail categories still saw their biggest visitor numbers in the month of December last year.
  • Flowers/gifts, fragrance/cosmetics, jewellery/luxury goods, books and music saw the biggest December uplifts in terms of time spent with sports and apparel seeing smaller increases.
  • According to minutes spent, men start their Christmas shopping later than women.
